CHAPTER IV

The next three months were a blur, but now the time had come. Sarah was feeling labor pains, and her new fiancé was at the ready.

After being up all night with his guard duty and making love to Sarah, Jeremy had sensed that she was due to deliver and he was prepared. The labor pains started about four o’clock in the morning and Jeremy got ready. He sent for the nearest doctor an hour earlier and at about four-fifteen the doctor arrived.

But things had turned for the worst.

Sarah began hemorrhaging blood and the doctor calmly but helplessly tried to stanch and couldn’t. He decided that he needed to deliver this baby for the sake of the mother. The three children were in the other room, scared.

Jeremy stepped out of the room to calm down the children, then he walked back into the room to talk with Sarah. “Doctor, would you mind if we talked about this for a minute?”

The doctor nodded. “I don’t have much time, though, so you can deliberate for a short time, but the window is closing if we are to save this child.”

“I understand,” Sarah said. “We only need a minute, please.”

Jeremy sat where the doctor was, looking his beloved Sarah in the eyes and holding her hand in both of his. He smiled as tears began flowing from her eyes.

“I know this isn’t your baby, darling, but I don’t want to lose this child. I’m willing to die for this child. I know you will take care of the chil –“

“Sh, sh, shhh,” Jeremy said, putting his finger to her lips. “Just calm down, my love. No one has to die tonight. I have been meaning to tell you something about me for a while now, and there was no good time to do it because I didn’t know how you’d react. Now, though, I have nothing to lose.”

Jeremy swallowed before continuing: “Sarah, I love you with all of my being. I have seen us spending the rest of eternity together, raising your children and watching them live their rich, full lives while we live ours and see the world grow and change and progress before our very eyes. Would you like to do that with me?”

“More so than anything in the world,” Sarah said, smiling through swollen, tear-filled eyes. “If only ...”

“Now, now, sweetheart, I want to listen very carefully,” Jeremy said, lowering his voice. “What I have to tell you will likely shock you, but I must ask you to try to stay calm. I am not entirely who I look like.”

“What are you talking about, my love?” Sarah asked, bewildered.

“I am immortal and I can make you immortal, too,” he said calmly with a lovesick smile in his eyes, directed right at Sarah’s panicked face. “I only look forty years of age, but that is because that was when I was given immortality.”

“I don’t understand what you’re saying,” Sarah said.

“I was a forty-year-old colonel in the Revolutionary Army, fighting at the battle of Bunker Hill,” Jeremy said.
